Inhabited by enterprising merchants since the 12th century, the city with its mediaeval and Gothic monuments is testimony not only of the high degree of expressiveness achieved by its artists but also of a precious and rare documentation of the 14th century conception of landscape in Italy.
The centre of city life was and is Piazza del Campo, noted for its fan?shaped layout, where the Contrade race the celebrated Palio. The piazza is a masterpiece of urban space which lives in symbiosis with the surrounding countryside.
Siena, listed in the UNESCO World Heritage since 1995, is an extraordinary mediaeval town which has preserved its characteristics and quality. The city is a masterpiece of devotion and inventiveness in which the buildings have been designed to fir in with the overall design of the urban structure and, moreover, to form a whole with the surrounding cultural landscape.
